  1. Funky Drummer Break

“The Funky Drummer Parts One And Two” by James Brown and the JBs is one of the most-sampled recordings in history. But even though the track is a cornerstone of hip-hop and other sample-based electronic music, for the first decade after its release, it was an obscurity. Popstar Drummer Free. Popstar Drummer is a fully featured app, which allows even the most advent drummer player to enjoy the sounds and sensations of playing the drums.

'Powerpuff Girls' theme[edit]

I believe that the 'Powerpuff Girls' theme song uses a sped-up version of the Funky Drummer break, but I can't verify this. Anyone have any information about this? - Ugliness Man 12:14, 17 February 2006 (UTC)

Yeah, it pretty clearly does. KMFDM also uses it at the accelerated tempo with synthesizers in their song Superhero too, which is why they sounded like a cover until I realized they were just using the same drum break and similar synths. I'm not sure how to mention it in the list of tracks, though a theme song is definitely a noteworthy inclusion. Night Gyr 07:07, 13 June 2006 (UTC)

Legality / copyright violation?[edit]

Am I allowed to use this in my songs? And could Wikipedia link to (or possibly even host) a WAV or OGG of the sample? --Nerd42 15:15, 20 March 2006 (UTC)

It's very much copyrighted i'm afraid. Any hosting of the loop would be obvious copyright violation. Basically, if you want the funky drummer loop, go and look for on the net elsewhere. Big in albania 23:14, 3 April 2006 (UTC)

Is this legal then? How do you copyright a drum beat? --Nerd42 14:43, 17 April 2006 (UTC)

The beat itself cannot be copyrighted (as a musical composition) but the phonographic (reproduction ) rights to Brown's recording are very much reserved by his record company.

Also, can a drumme out there transcribe this beat for us so as to give a musical description? THANKS--Tednor 15:43, 16 December 2006 (UTC)

Stub?[edit]

Surely with a list of songs that long this isn't really a stub anymore? Big in albania 23:14, 3 April 2006 (UTC)

Alive and Kicking[edit]

Is anyone aware that the 'Funky Drummer' beat didn't originate with this song? A Brooklyn, NY group called Alive and Kicking had a hit around the same time, maybe a bit earlier, with a song called 'Tighter and Tighter' (aka 'Hold On Just a Little Bit Tighter') Misterdoe 20:36, 17 January 2007 (UTC)

Funky Drummer Break

Allmusic.com says 'Tighter and Tighter' was released in 1970, like 'Funky Drummer'. However, 'Funky Drummer' was recorded on November 20, 1969 and released relatively early in 1970 (March). I haven't found the date 'Tighter and Tighter' was recorded, but unless it was definitely earlier this claim has no legs. InnocuousPseudonym 20:09, 11 February 2007 (UTC)
Unless the two youtube videos I just watched are the wrong version of the song they don't much sound alike to me. Xombi (talk) 18:59, 22 December 2009 (UTC)
