  • Windows 7: Patching your system files, using UxStyle. Before you can load a theme, Windows will verify if it has been digitally signed by Microsoft. Otherwise, the system will block you from installing it. However, you can work around this problem by modifying your system files, particularly the uxtheme.dll.

If your theme comes with an.exe installer file then install it by clicking on the exe file. If the theme comes with archive file like.zip package, then extract the files from the package and put them at C: Windows Resources Themes. Then double click on the.theme inside the theme folder you just copied to apply this theme.

If you love to customize the appearance of your operating system, you might be knowing that by default, Microsoft Windows doesn't allow you to apply third party themes. Out of the box, Windows allows using only digitally signed themes released by Microsoft, so it is limited only to the default themes shipped with the operating system. In this article, we will see how to bypass this restriction and install and apply third party themes in Windows 10.

With every new Windows release, Microsoft makes some minor changes to the theme engine and/or its format. This leads to the situation where for every single release, you need a special software (a so called UXTheme patcher) which supports that new release. Windows 10 is no exception. To install and apply third party themes in Windows 10, follow the instruction below.

Our friend Rafael Rivera created an amazing utility, Uxstyle, few years ago, which allows you to use third party themes in Windows XP and above. He has updated it to be compatible with Windows 10, so that's awesome news.

The main benefit of UxStyle is that it does not modify system files on disk. While files stay untouched on disk, the software performs in-memory patching and works smoothly and safely.

To get UxStyle, please refer to its official home page: http://uxstyle.com/.

Here is the direct download link for UxStyle with Windows 10 Support:

Run the installer and follow the instructions. It is quite simple because it only has a start page and the 'Done' page.

Voila, the magic is done, not even a reboot is required! You will see that it runs as an 'Unsigned Themes' service.

How to apply third party visual styles (themes) in Windows 10

  1. Once you have installed UxStyle, it's time to get some cool visual styles.
I recommend you to visit Deviantart and grab there some nice looking visual style.
  2. Copy your theme folder containing a .theme file and a folder containing .msstyles file to the folder 'c:WindowsResourcesThemes'.
  3. Now double-click on the .theme file and it'll apply the theme. You can also apply it using the Personalization Control panel as you can see in my screenshot.

That's it.

One of the most popular OS in Linux distributions is Ubuntu. If you ever liked the Ubuntu theme and wanted it on your Windows 7 then I have happy news for you. It is a little complicated but I have a step by step tutorial which I hope will make the task easier for you.

Patching your system files

Windows checks if themes are signed by Microsoft before loading them. If they aren't, Windows won't load them at all. To use them, you will have to modify Windows system files — uxtheme.dll in particular — and disable the check. In the past, this required booting into Safe Mode and manually replacing system files. Today, there are easier ways to do this.

UxStyle is an ideal solution. This application runs entirely in memory, disabling the check without modifying any system files. It's the easiest, safest way to enable third-party themes. However, its support for Windows 8 is experimental, so only Windows 7 users should use UxStyle. To use UxStyle, download it, extract the .zip file, and run the x64 installer if you're using a 64-bit version of Windows or the x86 one if you're using a 32-bit version of Windows. After installation, a new process named 'UnsignedThemesSvc.exe' will run in the background. Reboot your computer and you'll be able to install unsigned themes.

Finding themes

You will find custom visual styles for Windows on a variety of websites. One of the best places to hunt for visual styles is on Deviant Art. Check the appropriate category page for your version of Windows:

The themes are usually distributed in compressed format like .rar or .zip. Also almost all themes come with full instructions for installing the theme.

Installing Maverick (Ubuntu Theme)

As an example here I am going to use a theme Maverick for Win7 which attempts to port Ubuntu's default theme into Windows 7. I also personally like Ubuntu's theme. Below is a step-by-step tutorial to install the theme with some screenshots.

Step 1: Download and install UxStyle.

Step 2: Download the theme in .zip format from here.

Step 3: After downloading extract the archive using WinZip or any other compression tool.

Step 4: Copy every file and folder in Themes folder in the extracted folder to C:WindowsResourcesThemes. You might need administrator privileges to do this.

Step 5: Copy every file in Fonts folder to C:WindowsFonts. This also might require you to have administrator privileges.

Step 6: Open the Wallpaper folder in the extracted folder and set the picture as destop background. This is not necessary but is is the default wallpaper of Ubuntu.

Windows

Step 7: Goto Control Panel. A new theme will be there. Click the new theme to apply the Ubuntu theme to your Windows 7!
